December is typically the month members of the Walkabout Crew spend doing a stocktake on the year that was and finalise plans for January which here downunder is our favourite month to get out and amongst the vines.
Our wine of the year and also our favourite sparkling wine of 2019 is House of Arras EJ Carr Late Disgorged, 2004 vintage sparkling. This is a really amazing wine and our favourite sparkling wine from anywhere in the world. It was a very close decision between this and our red wine of the year for which wine finished on top overall, but we gave it to the sparkling in a split decision.
Our red wine of 2019 is Tahbilk 1860 Vines Shiraz which is amazing in many ways, and is a beautiful example of what is special about Australian wine. Honourable mentions go to Grant Burge Mesach Shiraz and Phadrus Estate Reserve Pinot Noir.
Our white wine of the year is Tahbilk 1927 Vines Marsanne and also one of our many great value wines of 2019. You can find this beauty for under $40 per bottle and it will cellar for many years without much difficulty.
And finally, our final honourable mention for 2019 goes to our favourite winery for 2019 (we discussed this at length and based our decision on quality of wines, quality of food, knowledge of cellar door staff and restaurant staff) which is Boat O’ Craigo in Victoria’s Yarra Valley wine region (just outside of Healesville if you are heading East).
That’s it for us in 2019, but we will be back soon with more reviews of wine and wine-related experiences in 2020.
