We admit it. We have a thing for Western Australian Cabernet Sauvignon. We think WA makes some of the best Cabernet Sauvignon in the world (Coonawarra in South Australia is our second choice). We also admit not being able to walk past a bargain at the bottle shop…
So when we found Byron and Harold 2018 “Tandem” Cabernet Sauvignon priced at $9.90 (normally $22) at one of the large retailers we thought it was worth a review.
Firstly, we should point out it is not the top level Cabernet Sauvignon made by the winery, it is their cheaper label, but the winery is highly regarded by wine critics.
On the plus side, this is a very well made wine with brilliant colour. By smell and taste it is clearly a Cabernet, with the leafiness very front-and-centre.
On the negative side it is lacking a bit of complexity and feels a bit “green”. Some additional time in the bottle will hopefully overcome this (we bought a few to find out!)
Our score: 90.5 points.
